The Faculty of Ignorance

How can a worldview and ways of being putting at the center stage our shared ignorance, its contours and patterns contribute to our collective wisdom?

Ignorance is a lot more than simply the absence of knowledge; ignorance can be produced, intentionally or not, and is inherent to the experience of being human. We all ignore a lot more than what we know.

As we move from the Age of Enlightenment to the Age of Entanglement, recognizing that fact might be one of the prerequisites to more humble, peaceful and holistic ways of knowing and doing together.

The climate/polycrisis is a result in part of the arrogance of many human societies over how little they actually know or understand about the complexity of the ecosystems we inhabit. Currently, leaders who pretend to have simple answers to the complexity of the challenges we face might be gaining momentum, but only because we are still operating under an outdated and self-terminating worldview. In the face of so much unknown and uncertainty, having a more careful approach, one that is informed by what we don't or can't know, might be wiser.

First explored as part of a fellowship with the McConnell Foundation in 2019, the Faculty of Ignorance is meant to become a think and do collective that develops various methods, provocations and initiatives embodying a more informed approach to ignorance in various practices and sectors.
